The flowrate of liquids, gases and steam can be determined simply, yet relatively accurately with variable area flowmeters.
The measured medium flows (upward) through a conical tube whose diameter is larger at the top than at the bottom.
The upward flowing fluid lifts a float located inside the tube.
The height of the float in the tube is a measure of the flowrate. The value of the flowrate can be read from a scale.
When a glass meter tube is used, the measured value can be read directly from a scale.
As for metal flowmeters, the transmission of the float position to the indicator is accomplished by a magnetic coupling system consisting of a permanent magnet located in or on the float and a permanent magnet follower on the indicator axis. The follower system does not lose its coupling even when the float takes a sudden jump due to a flow rate change.

Corporate research centers from ABB with a team of physicists and engineers have developed the optimal Coriolis design combining compactness and a low pressure drop with a superior measurement accuracy and zero point stability. The tubes oscillate at high frequency. This provides more accuracy, and faster reaction times. It also make the meter immune to environmental vibrations. The design ensures ideal decoupling of the tubes from the outside world.

One platinum sensor is heated to a permanent temperature of 60°C The heating current is proportional to the mass flow rate When gas flows are measured, this is usually done in a pipe. When a thermal mass flowmeter is used, two temperature probes are inserted into the pipe – the blue one is not heated and is therefore at the same temperature level as the gas surrounding it.

The second probe is heated electrically by a heating current to a constant temperature level of e.g. 60°C above the gas temperature. Not 60°C absolute, but always in relation to the blue sensor.

At low gas flows, the heated sensor will start to “feel” the cooling effect of the gas and the heating current has to be increased to keep the sensors at a constant temperature difference.

At higher gas flows the heating current has to be increased more and more to keep the delta at 60°C. This means that at higher gas flows (or wind velocities) the cooling effect increases.

The simple relation is: low gas flow – low heating current, high gas flow – high heating current. To express it in a technical way: the heating current is proportional to the gas flow.
